Kirby Phillips

Biography

Kirby Phillips (they/them) is a current Ph.D. student at Wayne State University in the Department of Communication. Kirby began their Ph.D. studies in 2022 following the completion of their M.A. in Communication Studies at the University of Alabama. After a career in politics and grassroots organizing, Kirby is excited to take that same passion and apply it to centering non-dominant groups in communication scholarship and co-creating instructional spaces with students in their home state of Michigan.

Academic Interests

Kirby is interested in using media effects theories and findings to help orient studies in the field of rhetoric. By centering non-dominant groups' communication in rhetorical and communication studies scholarship, Kirby hopes to have more nuanced discussions about power and its transformative nature. To pursue these academic interests, a lot of their scholarship focus on print culture, queer theory, disability studies, romance media, visual culture, and autistic self-representation in media.
