Film Curriculum

Requirements: Students majoring in Film must complete forty-six credits, distributed as follows:

1.  The following courses (13 credit hours) are required before undergraduate students can declare a major and take further course work:

COM 1500 - Survey of Mass Communication (3 credits)
COM 1600 - Introduction to Audio-TV-Film Production (3 credits)
COM 2010 - (VP) Introduction to Film (4 credits)
COM 2210 - Writing for Radio-Television-Film (3 credits)

2.  The core required courses for Film Majors are as follows (22 credit hours):

COM 2020 - (VP) History of Film (3 credits)
COM 4310 -  Audio Production (4 credits)
COM 5270 - (WI) Screenwriting (4 credits, max 8)
COM 5380 - Video and Film Editing (3 credits)
COM 5400 - Techniques of Film and Video Production (4 credits)
     senior capstone course, should be taken in the last twelve credits of study
COM 5410 -  Producer's Workshop (4 credits)

3.  Eleven elective hours are required from the following list:

COM 5020 - Studies in Film History (4 credits, max. 12)
COM 5060 - Documentary and Non-Fiction Film and Television (4 credits)
COM 5270 - Screenwriting (4 credits, max 8)
COM 5384 - Topics in Production Design and Theory (3 credits, max. 6)
COM 5420 - Director's Workshop (4 credits)
COM 5440 - Film Production (4 credits)
COM 6190 - Internship (1-3 credits, max. 6)
COM 6680 - Individual Projects in Media Arts and Studies (1-4 credits)

4.  Additional elective credits are recommended from the list above or from the following:

ENG 5040 - Film Criticism and Theory (4 credits)
ENG 5050 - Concepts in Film Studies (3-4 credits, max. 12)
ENG 5060 - Styles and Genres in Film (4 credits, max. 12)
ENG 5070 - Topics in Film (4 credits, max. 12)
GER 5350 - Early German Film (4 credits)
ITA 5150 - Italian Cinema Since 1942 (3 credits, max. 9)
N E 2060 - Israeli Film: Trends and Themes in Israeli Cinema (3 credits)
SLA 3710 - Russian and East European Film (3 credits)
SLA 3750 - Polish and Yugoslavian Auteur Cinema (3 credits)

Important Reminders: Every course required to complete an undergraduate major in the College of Fine, Performing & Communication Arts must be completed with a grade of "C" (2.0) or better.  This also includes all transfer credit that may be applicable to the major programs.  All students pursuing this major must complete the university's general education and competency requirements as well as the college's group requirements, which include completion of a foreign language through the third semester.

Advising: A specific advisor will be assigned to you upon declaring your major.  All students are expected to follow the published curriculum for their major and to consult regularly with an advisor.
